Gathering information about the industry and also rivals and competition is one of the main problems faced while writing a business plan. But these days with the internet and its easy approach that problem has been simplified to a large extent.

You can also look at businesses that are similar to yours. If you are planning to start a new business, you must know about businesses that are similar and if the plan is for a business that already exists you perhaps already know the business well. Whatever be the case it will only help your business to learn about your rivals.

You can do some research by physically going to your competition's outlets also. For example if you are planning to open a clothes store, look at other clothes stores in your city. Try to gauge their daily sales by noting the number of people entering the store and leaving with packages. Also, enter the store and note the pricing and discounts if there are any. You can also go outside your city and talk to clothes store owners there, tell them your purpose honestly and ask them about their business.

You can contact a broker and ask him to give you as much information as possible. If you find a clothes store, for example, for sale, look at your self as a prospective buyer and gauge why the owner is selling it off, what went wrong and what you can do to fix it. You can contact the owners and perhaps get detailed financial facts.

It seems like a lot of hard work, but through a little bit of moving around and surfing the net regularly to research upon various local businesses, you will be able to gather enough information. The information you gather will not go to waste as you will be using it in the business plan and even if you don't, you will at least get the knowledge regarding the strategies of your competitors.
